On Wednesday, dozens of Democratic lawmakers, together with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Ed Markey, D-Mass., wrote a letter to Training Secretary Miguel Cardona, urging the Division of Training to forgive the debt of debtors who’ve utilized for reduction after being defrauded by their colleges.

President-elect Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance are vocal critics of scholar mortgage forgiveness.

“Below the earlier Trump Administration, debtors’ functions have been allowed to languish for years,” the lawmakers stated of their letter. “If their utility was reviewed, debtors usually have been denied and granted no reduction.”

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Sick., echoed that message in a put up on X on Monday.

“I am on the Senate flooring warning in opposition to predatory for-profit faculties and shining a lightweight on borrower protection discharges by the Division of Training,” Durbin wrote. “We should proceed to course of these claims earlier than the subsequent administration comes into workplace.”

Trump himself once ran a for-profit school, known as Trump College, through which attendees stated they have been duped with false promoting and high-pressure gross sales ways. The college was open from 2005 to 2010. A federal courtroom accepted a $25 million settlement in 2018 with former Trump College college students.

The Trump transition workforce didn’t instantly reply to CNBC’s request for remark.

In the meantime, The Debt Collective, a corporation that advocates for debt cancellation, launched its “Final 50 Days” marketing campaign in November, to place strain on the Biden administration to forgive the debt of scholar mortgage debtors over the age of fifty.
