Expanded free submitting choices for 2025
For the 2025 season, Direct File, the IRS’ free tax submitting program, will probably be open to eligible taxpayers in 25 states. That is up from 12 states for the 2024 season.
This yr, taking part states embrace Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington state, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
In the meantime, IRS Free File, which presents free guided tax prep by software program companions, opened on Jan. 10. Eligible taxpayers can electronically file returns ready through Free File companions beginning on Jan. 27.
Many are eligible for free tax preparation through applications like Volunteer Earnings Tax Help and Tax Counseling for the Aged. One other free possibility for navy members and sure veterans is MilTax.
