UK retail sales rise in July, driven by warm weather and higher food prices

UK shopper spending picked up in July, helped by sizzling climate early within the month (the UK Met Workplace mentioned July was the UK’s fifth-warmest on document.) that boosted clothes gross sales, although momentum light later as temperatures cooled.

The British Retail Consortium reported whole gross sales up 2.5% year-on-year, slowing from June’s 3.1% achieve

  • like-for-like gross sales rose 1.8%
  • Barclays knowledge confirmed total spending up 1.4%, rebounding from a 0.1% fall in June.
  • meals gross sales rose 3.9% on the 12 months, reflecting each robust early-month demand and better costs
  • clothes gross sales jumped 4.2% — their quickest tempo since September 2024.

Economists are watching to see if households will draw on financial savings to maintain spending as job losses mount and wage progress slows.
